T56 to Mechanical Speedo... (Another!)
T56 to Mechanical Speedo... (Another!)
Hi everyone,
New here but its always been a wealth of knowledge even though I have never signed up.
Well today I've hit a stumbling block which I dont seem to be able to overcome easily.
I need to convert my T56 box to a mechanical speedo drive - now I know the easy routes are to buy the abbot X or use suitable gauge in my car but I wish to keep the stock clocks and I dont like the thought of the lag of the abbot X so I will be wanting to convert my box to a mechanical drive.
Problem is... I have contacted JTR about the kit they use to sell but they havent got back to me. I am in the UK so it's not easy to send my tailshaft to anyone in America and get it back necessarily in one piece...
So can I buy the bullet drive housing anywhere else and get any dimensions as to where to machine the housing? I have access to a brilliant machine shop at work and already have the bullet drive and gears that I would need just need a drawing for the housing or if someone could supply me with it?
Any help is appreciated!
Regards,
Dan

Re: T56 to Mechanical Speedo... (Another!)
A rule of thumb when it comes to retrofitting pieces and parts, and systems and modules and assembiles:
Make it fit just like it does in it's original application.
In the case of an EFI system, this is largely wiring needing to be connected, grounded, and otherwise accounted for propertly.
For your T56, you need to go to the original application of those gears (T5) and match the speedo pinion gear shaft to mainshaft offset and other related measurements. Any 83-92 T5 F-body tailhousing would do. Some modified tailhousings have used the speedo gear in place of the VSS wheel, and others have stacked it up against the VSS wheel.
Secondarily, the fellow also named Dan on here, goes by username alloy and does a quality job modifying the housings.

As JMD suggested, and I highly second his recommendation, get ahold of Alloy on here. He does an awesome job of modifying the T56 tailshaft housing to work with the old, cable-driven speedos. He's also a pretty modest guy, and might even be willing to help give your brilliant machine shop the right info to where you can just have it done over there. He's posted on here a few times with good pictures of the mods he does to the housing.
