87 T/a Kickdown problem plz help.

Hello, I have a 87 T/a that had a 305, I pulled it and put in a Gm Goodwrench Crate 350. When the kickdown is NOT connected it shifts, when it is connected it wont shift out of 1st... How do I fix this? I was told I have a 700R4 transmission.

While I'm not 100% sure this is your problem, it sounds like the trans is using the governor to shift without the cable hooked up, and when you have it hooked up you probably don't have it adjusted correctly. Did the 305 have TPI on it, or did you use a carb with both motors? If your intake setup is different with the new motor you might have to get a different TV cable to be able to get it set correctly. Btw, don't run it too long without the cable hooked up and adjusted right, that's a sure-fire way to burn up a 700r4 in a hurry.

First I'd like to say Thank You for your reply's, I LOVE TGO and come here all the time and recommend others to come here also.

Pat Hall,

The old 305 had a quadrajet carb on it, and a stock intake, the new 350 has a edelbrock performer intake and a edelbrock carb, I'm using a jegs brand linkage bracket which is the cheaper version of the same part from edelbrock.

I can fit the linkage into it's port in the linkage bracket, but when I hook up the linkage it has to be pretty much stretched to max just to fit on its peg on the carb. Is it possible to have it routed poorly behind the motor? The new intake isn't high rise or anything, I mean I'm having a hard enough time trying to find an air cleaner to fit under the hood with a standard sized intake and no spacers. So I'm not sure what the difference is other than possibly where it mounts the clip on this carb to the last unless there is something in the way or it's wrapped around something back there. In order to get the cable into it's bracket it's pulled tight, so no room for play there.

Sofakingdom, I'll check it out, thank you.
