Summit Transmission?
Im tired of all the problems with my old 700r4 which is probobly about to bite the dust anyhow. Been eyeballing the SUM-700300 from Summit its a turbo 350 trans. Heres the link http://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-700300
Has anyone used this transmission, if so any advice or input on the matter and what can i expect from it. For example is it going to lag when i shift manual stuff like that and is it worth the money after all u cant really beat a transmission for 660.00 Any help would be appriciated. Thank you

Re: Summit Transmission?
350's are easy to build, only 3 speed though, if not an issue, go for it (fuel mileage drops). My understanding is TC is different, so factor that in, cross member will need to be modded, 350 is shorter than a 700 (driveshaft shortening?), speedo drive may cost you a few bucks. May be cheaper to spend a little more and get a 700.
found= There are some th350's with a long tailshaft that match length of the 700, therefore negating driveshaft mod
350 has narrower gear spread too

Re: Summit Transmission?
i went with a th400 but same difference, i wish i had just built my 700 instead of trading it for the 400. they all have to be built to handle any power anyway, and when you are on the road you dont know how much you appreciate od until you lose it. especially if you are going to race it and probably will end up with steeper gears

Re: Summit Transmission?
My dealings with trannies is this buy a decent prebuilt trans with a warranty. I've rebuilt my 700r4 twice from dumb issues now I have to buy another trans because my case is too whooped to rebuild and now I'm getting a 700r4 prebuilt 2 yr warranty for 500$

Re: Summit Transmission?
I had the summit transmission in my car for a couple years. It shifted firm and I was very happy with the way it performed. I had a longer driveshaft made and I had to make some minor modifications to the cross member. I also purchased a kit from b&m to mount the torque arm. I have swapped to a t56. I missed having overdrive.

Re: Summit Transmission?
There's quite a difference in first gear (3.06 you have now versus 2.52) and OD (.70 * rear gear with lockup versus 1.00 * rear gear without lockup) So if the converter were similar, the car will be slower. And if the converter is a high-stall, it's going to run hotter. Not that a cooler is a bad idea.If you're going to castrate the car, at least make it easy on yourself. Get a 9" tailhousing TH350. Replace the long tailhousing with a spacer (http://www.bulkpart.com/2/product/7Q-35B.html ) and the 700-R4 tailhousing. No driveshaft change. No torque arm change.
We'll all know who to pass. The guy whose engine is SCREAMING in the slow lane, flipping through the $1 bills he's counting. Thinking he saved some money by cheaping out on the transmission cost, but costing himself more in the long run.
Get a good 700-R4, get the TV cable adjusted correctly and be able to enjoy the car everywhere (not just the track) and the fuel mileage.
Don't get me wrong; I know it's frustrating when a major repair is looming over your head like a bunch of clouds. I just got a new HVAC unit on our house and I hated the feeling the old one was going to go out. But for your car to truly do everything you want it to do, going back 40 years and removing a gear is never the answer.
