Fighting with 700r4 clutch packs.

Hey guys, seems I have mysekf in a pickle. Long story short i had the bushing in the pump decide to take a walk and i lost all my oil. I removed the tranny, pulle the pump, removed problem bushing, replaced it and utilized a sleeve retainer to hopefully prevent this from happening again. Now, problem is somehow the band around the drum behind the pump popped out of place, i fought with it for a long time but it just would not go and i ended up accidentally pulling both portions of the drum out and now two clutch packs are visible. Now, I'm no expert bu it appears as if you just have to line everything back up and in it goes, is this correct? I messed around for a while and got the two drums slipped back together, and it sure as **** looks like every clutch disc includin the last one slipped over its spline, but how can i be certain? Any tricks for the proper way to re assemble this portion of the tranny or is it just touch and go?

Thanks in advance!

The band is usually applied by a piston the VB. you will probably have to drop the pan and remove the VB. then you will have no tension on the band.

I just started to do transmissions, so I'm no expert. I built my th400 with the assistance of a good friend, who is a master tarns tech for a local ford dealership. He has built a bad*** th350 for a BBC Chevelle and a nasty 727 for his 68 Cuda. I would've never attempted this without the assistance of an ATSG manual.

Got everything together last night simply by some persistent wiggling. Everything actually went where it should amazingly easilly by a stroke of luck.

Re: Fighting with 700r4 clutch packs.

So a little update. Got it all together and it was working great, no more problems with re assembly either. Anyway, put about 70 miles on the car and parked it for a couple hours, then hopped in to make a beer run and drove away fine, turned at a yield and hammered down in first, pulled to maybe 5500 rpm and slapped into second, nothing happened and lost all power delivery instantly. No noises, no lurches, no nothing at all. Coasted into a parking lot and checked fluid levels, seems ok, touch low perhaps. Pushed it home and into the garage, but tried multiple times to get it to move on its own but no luck. Trans will shift in and out of park but nothing else, and I got my buddy to run through the gears and the shift lever on trans is moving like it should.
