Best way to pull transmission?
Hey guys,
84 T/A here. I'm looking at having the trans rebuilt this winter and would prefer not to pay someone $800 to remove and re-install it. What's the best way to get it out of the car?
Pull the motor with it attached? Jack up the car and go at it from under neath? Pay to have the shop do it?
I remember when I pulld the motor a few years ago that there are 6 bolts that hold the trans to the motor but I'm not sure what else needs to be looked at/disconnected.
TV cable, speedo cable, cooler lines, drive shaft need to come off that I can think of. Should I pull the pan and drain the fluid first?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Best way to pull transmission?
Jack up the car and take out from underneath.
Make sure you get the car high enough to drag the tranny out from under the car.
Pull the dust shield off the bottom of the bell housing and remove the 3 bolts that hold the torque converter to the flywheel.
Pull all the pipes, cables ect. off the trans then pull the driveshaft. You may loose some fluid whe you pull the driveshaft so if you wanted to drain it ahead of time, wouldn't be a bad idea.
Now put your tranny jack under the pan (if you don't own a tranny jack, a regular floor jack will work, just use a piece of plywood between the jack and the pan so you don't crush it.)
Raise the jack up to the pan snug to support the transmission.
Remove the 6 Bell housing bolts and then unbolt the transmission cross member.
Lower your jack and the tranny should drop down.

pull

Take the bolts out; then GET THE HELL OUTTA THE WAY, because it's COMING OUT.
Not a lot of "pull" to it, really.
Most of what passes for "pull" is actually, how to break its fall so nothing/nobody gets hurt.

Yes drain the fluid first. Unless of course your SO finds the ... aroma ... of AUTOMOTIVE body fluids .... stimulating. Bathing in trans fluid that suddenly spews unexpectedly from unexpected orifices isn't my idea of a "good time".

Agreed, ATF is my second least favorite automotive fluid.
