Shifter question for the guru's

1986 trans am, 700r4.........if I go to put the shifter into 1st gear, it seems like it wont get there. It starts out in 2nd gear. All the way down will only get me 2nd gear. Is there any slack adjustments on the cable anywhere or what might be the correct way of getting it to reach 1st gear? Without the cable hooked up, it will go thru all detents on the shifter, so I know its not the shifter. I tried moving the shifter in a few different positions with the 4 bolts on the bottom.

Any help is appreciated.

Disconnect the cable at the trans and see if you can move the trans lever into 1st.
If you can it is a cable / shifter problem.
If not it is a internal trans problem

IIRC
The outer cable is threaded at the trans end ; you may be able to get some adjustment there to take the slack out if that is the problem
