Change Transmission Fluid
I bought a car that has been sitting for several years it has everything original. It is a 305 TBI Iroc and would like to know what transmission fluid should I buy and how to change it. I have never changed any fluids on a car and I am sure it isn't very difficult. I just need the proper guidance to start getting my hands into the car. Thanks! Much appreciated!

Re: Change Transmission Fluid
i agree with buying a service manual.
your transmission dipstick might say what fluid to use on it. probably mercon/dextron 3?
if you dont have a drain plug, which you probably dont, you'll need to unloosen the pan and catch the fluid in a drain pan. the filter will be inside. you should be able to buy everything including a service manual at your local parts store.
when changing the pan gasket, i like using the rubber ones. the cork ones suck. JMO.

Re: Change Transmission Fluid
what transmission fluid should I buy
ANYTHING you buy in the store today, is VASTLY better than what they used 25 yrs ago. Don't go for "the cheeeeeeeeeeeeepest", but don't stress over what brand, either.
how to change it
Just go to the store and get a filter/gasket kit. Might look like cork but isn't. The newer gaskets sorta "look like" cork, for the old geezers that somehow think tree bark is superior to ... something .... 20th century; but it's NBD. Most any gaskets you buy nowadays aren't actually cork even if they look like they are. The solid rubber ones are definitely "better", but the regular ones like ATP or the like, are fine.
You'll need around 6 - 7 quarts of new fluid. Around 4 - 5 will stay in the torque converter. If it's not terribly funky, that won't too much matter.
For an automatic transmission don't bother with a factory service manual. It's 25 - 30 yrs out of date. Instead, get the ATSG one. http://www.bulkpart.com/Merchant2/me...ode=4L60-700R4
