Stall converter suggestions
Any suggestion on stall convertor? The car already has 4.10 gears. The car is not a race car but a fun test and tune, a week cruiser

Re: Stall converter suggestions
from what make out. i would go with no less then a 10" 3000 stall.
stay away from the 2500 stuff.. not worth it.. and the listing are to tight/close to make a diff. with the lower rpm bands.
ya want the eng to be into the rpm band well past the start of the tq start point..and even when they list them at 3000 with out gobs of TQ to make them work ya get lucky it they get to the 2500/3000 stall point..
when driving the smaller stalls it will feel like a stock unit. till ya pound it..
with the 4.11 you will have alot of fun.
as for lock up non lock up.. i run non lock up my self..
with a over drive.. its a 4th gear. i dont use at the track. and not that much on the street. freeway hops yes..

Re: Stall converter suggestions
The converter it now is a 3000-3200 flash, but only footbrakes to 2000, I was thinking maybe a 3000 footbrake stall would drop my et more and still be streetable. But that would require I 4000 flash?

Re: Stall converter suggestions
like i posted.. min 3000 stall. ya got to the eng into rpm band that its well into making power.
to many converters are listed at 3000 but dont make it if ya dont have the TQ to get it there.
have had/used a few listed in the 3000/3500 that work fantastic when ya have 400 TQ at 2500 rpm most of them are with a Big block. nothing in the 2500 stall works. i have 2. 9" converters now iv had made for me. that stall at 3500 and flash to 4200prm. with 450/500 TQ. put them with a eng that only makes 300 TQ ya might only get 3000 stall. with a flash of 3500.
most of the time you will see the 10" listed in the 3000 rpm. if ya cant buy one off the shelf. ya might have to move into the 3500. it will still only get into the 3000 rpm with under the 400 fpt. most of the time.

Re: Stall converter suggestions
A chassis dyno isn't going to tell you the best converter to use because it's already giving results for the current converter in the car. An engine dyno gives a proper powerband of the engine.
A converter needs to be matched to the camshaft for best performance. Everything else about the car only compliments the powerband that the engine operates in.
Need cam grind info to suggest the proper converter stall speed. In simplest terms, for street/strip, the converter should stall around 500 rpm into the powerband. For full race, the converter should stall at least 1000 rpm into the powerband.
Advertised duration (total, not 0.050") is one of the best ways to determine which stall speed should be used. Too much stall speed can be just as bad or worse than not enough. Below the rated stall speed and the converter needs to slip. Slippage makes heat and heat kills transmissions. All converters slip. All converters stall. A street converter just does it at much lower rpms because that's the rpm range it's normally used in.

Re: Stall converter suggestions
After talking with the guys, I decided on a 4200 flash stall and they replaced my lock up clutch and springs at no cost while he was in there.
