Difficulty on gear ratio change?
I have the stock 10 bolt LSD although I haven't checked I'm sure my ratio is 4.0
I'm thinking of dropping the ratio to 3.42 with this kit
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00AYJ3P5Y?pc_redir=1397845513&robot_redir=1
2 things-
#1 will this work on an LSD? or open differential only?
#2 what's the difficulty on this? I really don't want to have to remove the whole rear end, but if I have to, I would. Thanks in advance. BTW is an '88 Camaro 5.0 IROC-Z

Re: Difficulty on gear ratio change?
One thing is that those gears are for a 8.5" 10 bolt rear. An '88 Camaro from the factory will have either the 7.5"/7.625" 10 bolt or a 9 bolt rear.

That's correct, those gears will not fit your rear end.
Cheap gears will be trouble. Get good quality gears like Yukon, US Gear or Motive Performance.
Get a good quality installation kit wiht the super shim set, like the Yukon kit.
Setting up a set of gears is about a 8 on a scale from 1 to 10. If you don't know what you are doing then don't do it. You must know how to set the pinion depth, bearing preload and backlash to get the correct contact pattern. It takes a few special tools and you must know how to read the contact pattern.

Re: Difficulty on gear ratio change?
My two cents. I've built exactly one diff. 9-bolt, machined, shimmed and changed from 2.77 to 3.27. It's more or less silent and functions perfectly. It took me many many hours to do but if you like to tinker, can get hold of the tools, are careful and patient and prepared to read a LOT then go for it. You'll save (or waste) a bunch of money but if it works it'll be really satisfying. You may not want to do it again but you'll have learned a little something. Tons of help and info. on the board and web so never any need to panic. I'm confident enough to try again and change the ratio on a 10 bolt.
Re: Difficulty on gear ratio change?
I, along with others, have coached many people through the process many times on this sight and about 12 others. If you are willing to spend the money and the time to do it right then get started and ask a lot of questions along the way. My first bit of advice may be some of the most important advice you can get, and that is get the best quality parts that you can find. Cheap parts are going to cause you problems and possibly more money. Second bit of advice, be VERY patient. This job requires completely assembling and disassembling the rear end many times to get it right. Third, ask a lot of questions. If you don't know exactly what you need to do then ask. You will need to be able to post pictures.
