Need opinion on ring patterns.

Need to see what you guys think, only second set I've set, and I feel like this is slightly off. It could just be my big concern being this is a set of 4.10 r&p I'd like to not chew up in the first 500 miles. Application is 88 bird with 99 rear axle, torsion LSD, 4.10 r&p with all new bearings and seals throughout. Backlash is anywhere from .06-.09, avg of the bunch of times I test it is somewhere around .07-.08, and included is a diagram of what the manufacturer is suggesting for an acceptable pattern for these gears. Way that I yielded these results were with axles in and using a wrench on the ring bolts slowly in each direction many times. Let me know what you think!

Looks good to me. I think you nailed it. Just be sure that you get the bearing preload right and it should be good.

Re: Need opinion on ring patterns.

I thought it was on, but I don't do this enough to know. My last rear end is still trailer-ing daily and 40k miles since I rebuilt my old trucks rear, so I'm confident in the work I've done, and backlash I'm pretty sure is spot on, so it always comes to the patterns that make me feel uneasy because they never look perfectly like any diagram I see. Thanks so much for the help! Anyone else see something that is a concern don't be afraid to chime in.

Jon

Re: Need opinion on ring patterns.

Don't worry so much about those charts. Look at the pattern that you have. Notice how even the contact is between the root and the face of the teeth. If the contact was wider at the root then the pinion would be too deep. If it was wider at the face then the pinion would not be deep enough. If it is too far to the toe then you can increase the backlash a little and it should move to the heel a little. If the contact is too far on the toe on one side and too far to the heel on the other then you need to make some more pinion depth adjustments. I think what you have is pretty well right where it needs to be. The drive side is a little off to the heel, but I don't think you could adjust it out without messing up something else.
