trans cause of death?

I found this when I took the tailshaft housing off of my 87 GTA's 700r4

Could this be why I only had first gear?

Obviously its a gear, but can someone tell me what its called? & If I replace it will this trans be fine?

It was getting water in it due to a radiator malfunction & I have another tranny to put in the bird already, but I def wanna rebuild this one. Perhaps I dont need to?

No. That gear of for your speedometer. Replacing the gear will get your speedo working, but I'm guessing you have other issues with the trans. If it had water in it, the clutches are most likely toast.

Find another one, they are not hard to locate.

Car: Yes
Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
Re: trans cause of death?

Yes, it could.

That's your governor gear. Without that, the trans always thinks you're sitting still. Not much reason to shift if the car's not moving, eh??

Replace it and see what happens. No guarantees but that at least accounts for not shifting out of 1st.

I already have another trans to put in the car, so I'll be installing it hopefully today. I will also replace that governor gear & put that trans n a safe place. I'll get back to it eventually.

Thanks soFa kING DOM!
