700R4 Issues

Hey guys, I'm having some 700R4 issues, hoping to clear them up to get a car done. I'm working on a 1983 Trans Am, which my sister bought needing a new engine. I decided to pull the pump and install a new bushing and seal, as well as a new bushing and seal into the tailhousing. I dumped a quart of fluid into the torque converter, and installed it into the transmission. The torque converter was seated completely into the transmission (i think) since I couldnt get my smallest finger between it and the case. Now that its installed into the car, I broke the camshaft in, and tried to put it in gear and found nothing. I pulled the top cooler line off of the radiator, and have no fluid at all coming from it. The converter had a pretty lage gap between the mounting ears and the flex plate, so I machined some spacers at work to make the distance between 1/8 and 3/8 of an inch that it pulls out when bolted up. Any ideas?

Re: 700R4 Issues

Was the car running and movable under its own power before you started working on it?

You should not have had to install spacers between the converter and flex plate.

Did you just separate the pump halves to replace the bushing or did you do other stuff to the pump?

Is the pump-to-case gasket installed (clocked) correctly?

Did you replace the filter seal in the pump?

Is the filter fully seated in the pump?
