1982 Trans am t-5 swap
Hello all, this is my first post on here I have a 1982 Trans am that I bought as a roller. It was originally a 305-4spd car but I am building a vortec headed 350 for it. I was going to buy a built stalled th350 from a friend but I decided I'd have more fun ripping through the gears with a 6 speed. After looking into the cost of an lt1 t-56 tranny, I decided I should just throw in a t-5 since I had an extra one laying around from a previous project. My question is will there be any issues using the t-5 since it was a 4 speed from the factory? I have a friend parting out an 84 camaro 5 speed car if I need any extra parts.
I am well aware that the t-5s don't hold up to abuse from high torque engines but I figure this will work for now while I save up for a 6 speed.
Thanks in advance!

Re: 1982 Trans am t-5 swap
A T-5 will not bolt up to the rest of the setup you now have. (well, bolt up AND WORK... those pesky details
)
Best thing to do is to get EVERY SINGLE PIECE of everything to do with the clutch & transmission from your friend's car.
Trans
BH
Fork
Hydraulics (comes out of the car as one piece, all lines intact, fluid remains filled)
Reservoir bracket
Flywheel
Clutch
Pedals (CRITICAL!!!)
All brackets, braces, bolts, hardware, etc., ESPECIALLY the little braces that go from the pedal pivot to the clutch master cyl
Shifter
Drive shaft
Crossmember
Torque arm
Torque arm mount
You'll have to add a set of holes for the crossmember; the 82 chassis didn't have the "feature from the future" to mount the later-model crossmember, which goes about 3" or so further rearward.
Might have to massage the shifter hole; not sure about that. Will DEFINITELY have to add the master cyl U-bolt holes, and slightly elongate the hole in the firewall where the old linkage crap went through it.
Whatever 4-spd stuff you have left over (pedals, linkage, drive shaft, whatever) will likely sell pretty eeeezy on the classifieds on this site.

Re: 1982 Trans am t-5 swap
It's not that involved at all.
Sure, looks like a long list of parts; but you'll see, it's pretty much a piece o cake.
If you don't have all those pieces, DO NOT disassemble your car, because you will either have to just put it right back together the way it was, or ride the bus until you DO have them all.
