Speedometer drive gear
Speedometer drive gear
I recently bought a 1982 Z28 with a 305. The speedometer is running higher than my actual speed. The previous owner out a 700r4 in it. My question is, what speedometer gear do I need? It still has the stock rear end. I'm new to this forum thing, so any help is appreciated.

Re: Speedometer drive gear
You need to determine what your ring and pinion ratio is before you do anything else.
No guessing here. You don't know if the gears were ever changed. Pull the differential cover off and start counting. It'll give you a good excuse to change the gear lube too.
Also, read through the stickies at the top of this board.

Re: Speedometer drive gear
Better count the pinion gear teeth.
Aftermarket ring gear of 41 teeth doesn't narrow it down much.
