Hey folks, I have an 83 transam with 5l engine. Not sure which transmission.
She has sat for the last 3 years. Recently stuck a new battery in (the winters destroy them in Alaska). She started up and I got her up on the driveway. But tried to move her a couple days later and no go.. then after a few minutes she moved forward.. then again wouldn't move. A few minutes later got reverse to work.
There is fluid in the transmission. No leaks that I could find.
Any idea what could cause this? Trying to decide what to do with her as I have lost the storage space. She is really rusty but if the transmission is an easy/ fix I may try to get her back at least to a condition to be able to drive her to the big city of Anchorage 200 miles away.

What's the temperature there? Could be that something is just gunked up in the transmission from sitting for 3 years, or it could be something worse.

Does it run ok? When you say "no go" do you mean that the car just acts like it's in neutral? When it starts to move, does it feel 'normal?' or does it take really high rpms to get any forward motion?

 

The temperature has probably gotten as low as minus 30 but that wouldn't be for more than a couple days in the winters. The engine runs and sounds great. Yes it acts like it is in neutral. seems to move totally normal when it does move.

Mmk, I could be wrong but it sounds like you've lost some gears. Try shifting it down into 1st and seeing if it will move, then 2nd, D, and OD. See if that helps it get going, probably want to look at a rebuild.

 

thanks for the tips. I did run it through all the gears. Got a couple calls in to shops in Anchorage to do a rebuild.. Got to find a trailer to bring her to town on.
