transmission question

Hey guys I bought a 1982 trans am and when I drove it home it's seemed to have a very high rpm at 60mph... When I got the car home I got under it and immediately noticed that it had a newer year transmission in it because on my old 82 it had a cable driving Speedo and this transmission has an electronic sensor on it... Now..I know there is no vss computer in this car, could this be the reason for the high rpm?(feels like it never hit 4th gear) and if that's the reason is there any other way besides going out and putting a vss in this car to make it shift properly.... Thank for your help in advance

Re: transmission question

Welcome to TGO!

Your car should have a 200R4 but there should be the drive cable coming down from the dash into the mechanical gear drive. Can you manually shift through all four gears? At 40mph or so, the car in "D", should drop down into "OD". MY RPM's at 70mph, are 2600 with my 700R4. With the 200R, you will have slightly less because you have a better OD gear than I do.

Since you say it looks like a newer transmission is installed, it's possible that they installed a TH400 or TH350, which gives you one less gear. It's also possible that they misaligned the TV cable.

Can you tell us more about the car? What RPM are you running at 60 and 70? What size tires and wheels do you have.

This will help us narrow down our suggestions for assistance.

Re: transmission question

Thx for your reply... I will attempt to look at the car this weekend ..the weather is kinda bad here in Pa rt now....I do remember seeing the gear cable for the Speedo coming down from the dash....I know they put a new after market shifter on it...so that could possibly be it issue like your said.... However I didn't feel the car hit OD the day I drove it home.... And the tachometer wasn't working....

Re: transmission question

Ozz. The third gens didn't come with a 200 4r. The only third gen to get the 200 4r was the 1989 TTA

The 82 had 3 speed autos (th-200c)

Here's pictures of the transmissions and pan bolt count and shape.. Easy way to ID trans
