T5 Speedo Drive Gear Question

New Guy Here... I've been lurking for months learning what I can about Camaro transmissions and have found a lot of useful information. Odd thing is, I don't have a Camaro.

I've got a 78 MGB convertible and am swapping out the anemic 4 cyl with the SFI 3.4 V6 out of a 95 Camaro and the T5 out of an 85 V6 Camaro (tag 13-52-071).

I'd like to use my existing mechanical speedometer and have it be reasonably accurate. The drive gear on my output shaft is a blue (7 tooth?) gear and I have no drive gear at present. I've been looking around for the part and it looks like I can get the drive gear and connection from several locations (thegearbox.org being one). I figure a 22 tooth gear would be pretty close for what I need with a 3.909 rear end and 195/74/14 tires (~24" diameter).

Without dropping the tranny and pulling the tailshaft, how do I know if I have a 1.84" OD drive gear or a 1.76" OD drive gear?

That would determine which 22T driven gear I order.

22 tooth grey dimension -1.75 x .305 x .810
18-22T .810 diameter gears must be used with a 1.84 OD speedo drive gear.
22 tooth green dimension -1.75 x .305 x .870
22-25T .870 diameter gears must be used with a 1.76 OD speedo drive gear.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Doug

Re: T5 Speedo Drive Gear Question
The third gen T5 used the series that stops at 22 teeth for the driven. And the drive gear is larger than the Muncie gears. Since it is blue and not purple, I would attempt a tooth count. If 7,assume it is the larger style drive gear.

Re: T5 Speedo Drive Gear Question
I got my speedometer drive and gear in the mail the other day. The retainer bolt they sent me was a 1/4-20 bolt which doesn't fit in my T5. Pretty sure I need metric.

Anybody know what diameter and thread pitch the speedometer drive retainer bolt is? I'll pick one up on the way home from work.

Thanks a bunch.

Doug
