She Just Wont Go...
Alright fellow members and thirdgen enthusiasts i was getting on the freeway moderate acceleration and out of no where i heard some slight grinding noices and the car just reved like i was in neutral pulled over and checked fluid which is clean trans rebuilt 3,000 miles ago, so i thought maby the stock flex plate broke but not that either so now im thinking either the new 2300 stall is broke or the tranny pump is bad. When you start the car it you can here a ticking sound from the torque converter area and when its in gear nothing happens at all tried giving it a little rev to 6,000 rpm or so to see what might happen and its like neutral. Any ideas? Can a bad converter cause it to free rev like that?

So out of 50 people no one knows if a torque converter failing can cause it to free rev...
Re: She Just Wont Go...
Don't take it personal , It's just that there are several things that could cause that , none of em easy to fix , and pretty much all requiring the removal of the transmission & torque converter . Yes of course the converter could cause that , just as the pump and other deeper failures could as well .One thing you can check , just for the hell of it , would be the transmission fluid pressure . there is a threaded plug that can come out on the driver's side of the transmission and a pressure gauge would thread in there .
Course , since you've got metal ticking sounds , and didn't find the flexplate/torque converter bolts loose , it's all but assured that the transmission will need to be pulled yet again .

how did you check the flexplate? the stock flex plate is pronene to cracking between the bolts. Its hard to see without removing the flexplate. the ticking sound is is the crank spinning and the broken section of flexplate hitting the otther half the is not spinning.
i have had this issue several times. i finally switch to a sfi approved aftermarket flexplate.

you could pull one of the lines loose, start the car and see if it pumps fluid. even with a broken converter, the pump should pump fluid.
one test for a bad converter is, lay it down on a table, stick your finger inside and spin the gear you feel. it should only spin one way. if it spins both ways, its probably a broken stator.
the ring gears been pointed out, and the bolts.
other than that, its gonna have to come apart. do you have a warranty?

Is this a 700r4/4l60? Was the sun shell replaced with a heavy duty unit when the trans was rebuilt?
