Re: engine and transmission install

You could do it either way.

My opinion is that it is easier to have the tranny bolted up and ready to go and then put both in at the same time than to try to lift the transmission in from the bottom and reach around to put bolts in.

Either way you want to recruit a friend to help, typically one guy to work the cherry picker and another to guide everything.

Thanks!! I just didn't know if they both could go in from the top. guess I'll have to get it high off the ground . And me too I like the motor and tranny ready to go .

Re: engine and transmission install

I only did the job twice, but would do it the same way again.
Out, 1st remove distributor, 2nd transmission and 3rd engine with headers and accessories minus PS pump and alternator.
In, 1st install engine with headers and accessories minus PS pump and alternator, 2nd transmission and 3rd distributor.

Though I had the car on a lift.

Re: engine and transmission install

I have done many engine/trans together installs on third gens.. I only jack car up high enough for the cherry picker to fit under car.

install engine/trans, get engine mount bolts in, then slip a jack under the trans from the side of car.

Unhook cherry picker, do what all I need to do under hood for right then, then I jack ou the rear of car from the center of rear axle housing and place jackstand under the rear axles.. Bolt up crossmember, torque arm, trans mount..

Next jack up front of car, slide those drive on oil change type ramps under the front wheels and put exhaust and all on.
