700R4 Shifting Woes

To start, I have an 87 700r4. Upgraded from 305 to a strong 350. Installed transgo 700r4 shift kit, .500 boost valve, vette servo, heavy duty 3-4 clutch pack. Also, went from a 2.73 open rear end to ~3.50 posi.

So I have searched for a while and I cannot seem to find how to change the non-WOT shift points. I bought the governor weight kit to change WOT, but had no effect on the light throttle shift points. Some things people have mentioned:

1) Adjust the TV cable to change the light shift points: I think this is a no-no as I have only heard horror stories of people adjusting shift points with the TV cable and destroying their transmission
2) Outside heavy weights on governor have slight effect on shift points: Is this true, could I drill out the weights on the outside an lighten them up?
3) Servo: Already changed to corvette...

I usually wouldn't mind, but the 1-2 shift kicks my **** (all others are nice/smoth). It shifts RIGHT when I am halfway through a corner going ~7mph and it barks (set shift to hard on kit and regretting it). I fear it is straining the differential.

Any thoughts? Has anyone had success modifying the outside weights? Thanks in advance!

I played a lot with the governor weights and springs, they only controlled later and earlier shifts, not the issue you are having.
If it does the same thing with the stock governor, I would look in to the shift kit mods about the harsh 1-2 shift.

Thank you for the response. I am definitely looking into the hard shift by modifying the shift kit. I am currently running the stock governor (changed weights, but still fine tuning). As far as the governor controlling the earlier shift, did you modify the outer weights to change/delay the early shift?

Re: 700R4 Shifting Woes

Sounds like the 2nd accumulator was stacked solid with washers. If so remove them and use heavier springs in it.

RBob, good call! It was stacked with washers (the servo). I heard it was a combination of the 2nd gear valve body spring (go lighter for firm - which was done) and the servo.

Any fix advice on the low throttle shift points?

Thanks!

Re: 700R4 Shifting Woes

You can upgrade the shift valves with ones from a z28 or trans am valve body. This will get you more performance part throttle shifts and 5500 rpm WOT shifts with the correct governor. I have a spare valve body if you are interest...

I did not modify the outer weights, only the inner weights and the springs.
This should explain it better then I could http://www.dragracingonline.com/tech...vi_9-bm-1.html

Re: 700R4 Shifting Woes

Thank you all for the replies! For anyone reading this with a similar problem, the solution is calling Dana

But really, for a slightly later shift point, remove just the light spring from the governor. And for smooth shifts, never use the washers in a transgo kit.

Morgsie, if I decide to go with the valve body upgrade, will send a PM. Thanks!

Re: 700R4 Shifting Woes

Removing the light weight spring in the governor is something I started doing a long time ago and it will make for a slightly later shift point as stated above. This also gives you forced downshifts a little easier. If you still want a later part throttle shift you can use the Sonnax TV Cable Corrector Kit (AS1-01K) setup for this. It installs very easy on the TV cable and you will have to re-adjust the TV cable and this will give you later part throttle shifts without pulling the TV cable out of adjustment.
