TH350 Torque Converter Selection
Hello Folks
I need some solid factual advice from experienced people who have results in this scenario.
Car 1982 Z/28
400+ 0.60 "408ci sbc" stock bottom end rebuilt and pro built to run on pump gas 9.0:1 comp with vortec heads,,750 holley,,weiand stealth intake ,,MSD billet ing etc. 1 3/4 headers full length into single 3 inch pipe.
B&M Th350 and shifter 3.08 possi 27inch tyres 255 60x15 on 15x10 wheels,, full spohn Th350 conversion kit and torque arm.
The crow cam and lifters were custom ground to suite compression,,diff ratio,,tyre height, size of engine and 1.52 rollers used and all setup with dial indicator.
The cam produces max power from 1500rpm,, 5700rpm.. the lifters were ground to suit the lobes exactly
reason I went into detail is I got it set up proper.
I had a T700r4 in this car and first gear was way too low and it was wheel spinning under torque and still spinning in 2nd gear and eventually the gearbox had the guts ripped out of it in 3 months.the car was still wheel spinning in 3rd like a big block.
Im not here to talk about T700,s.
The engine is setup to pull hard from 1500 rpm to 5700rpm which is a bit above the crap crank and rods capability,,but if it dies I have a new Dart block and crower rotating assembly ready.
I hear street cars here reving in traffic and going nowhere,,,,,i don't want that,,i want the car to drive off the lights like a normal car at 1000rpm whatever,,,,i want quick changes and maximum use of the Th350 higher gearing,,,what stall speed do I need,,,, what is lock up calculated at,, im in Australia and will need a custom torque converter made..
im not into stall converters and don't want a car that works like a manual car with the clutch dropped.. Im not into drag racing but I want it to go.

Re: TH350 Torque Converter Selection
No offense, but you're asking a lot from a converter. To take advantage of the power band you have, you need more stall. But you say you want the car to move at 1000 rpm. You have to find a happy medium. I'd call a converter specialist like Hughes and they would be able to guide you in the best direction.
Good luck.
Good luck.
