Need help with Transmission shifting hard
Need help with Transmission shifting hard
Hey third gen, my 92 trans am seems to shift really hard when you put it in gear and when driving it seems to be a little better but still shift hard as it goes through the gears. Fluid looks brand new and trans was rebuilt, I aont know if it was done correctly or not as it was the previous owner. I was thinking theshift linkage could be the problem? Thanks, Bryce

That would be the job of the throttle position cable that runs from the throttle to the transmission . this cable is commonly mistaken for a "kick down" cable and in reality it's very much more than that . It controls the "line pressure" within the transmission based on throttle setting and is most certainly responsible for how hard or soft it goes through the gears (as well as a couple of other important transmission operating parameters as well) . If this cable is not properly set , the transmission can be damaged and there is only one proper way to set it right . This is NOT an "adjustment" , there is no "range of setting" for it , It's either set up properly , or it isn't .
Do a quick search for "TV Cable setting" to find the right procedure for setting the cable correctly and hopefully it'll cure your hard shifts ....
Re: Need help with Transmission shifting hard
Where your shifts are harsh , It sounds as if the cable might be misadjusted in the "too tight" direction . The way it works is , the more you step on the gas pedal , the more it pulls on the TV cable , which "tells" the transmission how much to draw out the shifts and how hard (or soft) to engage the shifts . When your really stepping on it , it will hold each gear longer and shift more firmly into the next gears . When your not really stepping on it , the shifts happen sooner and softer . If the TV cable is making the transmission think your stepping on the gas more than you actually are , maybe it won't allow itself to go into gear at such a (mistakenly perceived) high throttle setting ????
Bottom line , again , is to do a search of how to properly set that cable , do it and do it right , and if this fails your problem WILL be somewhere within the transmission itself .
PS , before ya ask , the ECM (computer) has exactly nothing to do with when , or at what force , the transmission shifts , and controls the lockup of the converter only .
Best of Luck with it , and please post the results of your hopeful success in setting the TV cable and solving the problem .....
