New or Used
hey guys, as summer approaches, and i plan on getting my few household projects done, i'm going to try and fix my limited slip diff too. according to the great info ive gotten from the guys here on this site, it seems the LSD is blown. i have 2 options i'm thinking of: 1 being that i put in a NEW LSD to replace the stocker in there and use the stock drum brakes and my new 3.73 gears i put in. option 2 being that i put in a USED 4th gen rear assembly and use their gearing and used LSD inside already, this would give me disk brakes but then i'd have to do the swap over too for that. both options are about $400, but option 2 would require more work, but i may get more out of it.....looking for opinions or other ideas. thanks guys

Re: New or Used
Before I upgraded my differential I took a look at the 4th Gen option.
I read what seemed to be every thread I could about the 4th Gen rear.
I had made up my mind within the first few threads but wanted to be thorough.
IMO , If you want the best go New. If the words Auburn and Cone come up run.
Not only can they not be rebuilt there no way to know if they have "any" life left in them with out taking a very good look.
That means rolling the dice or removing covers until you find one.
Then there the extra 2in on each side. Not for me.
The rear discs for me are not a reason to consider the 4th Gen. with what it has against them. Breaks are generally 70% front and 30% rear when used if that. Decent shoes and new drums is the way I went.
The new option can/is expensive. Would you please explain the $400.00 to do it.

Re: New or Used
I guess you already know that the 4th gen rear end is about 4 inches wider, which will push your wheels out 2 inches.
Disc brakes don't help much unless you are road racing and getting the brakes hot.
A new Eaton or Yukon differential would be good. You might want to upgrade to 28 spline axles at the same time.

From the different threads I've read about different dimensions of the 4th Gen rear, the 2002 rear is about 3 inches wider.
Usmc, when I looked on summit racing site for a new lsd, showed them all around $400

Re: New or Used
This and the list below is why I was wondering about the Money
= 28 Spline Eaton Posi unit like mine = $ 519.00 = http://www.summitracing.com/parts/et...-010/overview/
You can get them from Toms Differentials for $ 429.00 + tax + shipping.
Also, at the "Rear End Shop" (that's there name) is where I bought all of my parts in order to get the 3 year warrantee on parts and labor. The only thing that was higher then where I could have gotten it cheaper was the Eaton Posi I paid $500.00 for. I could have gotten it for around $ 450.00 to the door . All of the parts are top of the line.
This is a breakdown of my build. Some of these parts are necessary for the build and some can be changed to match your personal preference as in brand and style L.S.D./Locker.,etc.
