speedometer gears

Hey everyone just picked up a 91 firebird 305 last week. Speedo didn't work was told it needed a sensor so I had it looked at and was told it had the wrong gears for the speedo. How do I figure out what ones I need to get it fixed? Thanks in advance.

Re: speedometer gears

If it had the wrong tooth count (but correct type) gears for the speedo (but still had the correct sensor,) the speedo would work, but be incorrect.

If you're going to "have it looked at" but pursue answers here, you're better off jacking the car up and unbolting the VSS yourself. It's easy to remove. Then post pictures.

It could be a wrong year VSS. Or the gears could really be the wrong ones. It's a guessing game with what you've provided.

You can add some detail about your car (and location) here:

Re: speedometer gears

Okay I'll see what I can do this weekend. All he said was the gears inside were wrong and that the speedo was reading way out of whack. I'll see if I can't get the pics and such this weekend. Thanks for the response.
