700r4- V6 internals in a V8 case?
I searched for a while and didnt find any answers so will it work?
I have 2 700r4s
One is an 89' from a tbi 305 bird. All forward gears work great but doesnt have reverse. When it lost reverse i was trying to back up a hill and it wouldnt go backwards at all but wasnt rolling forwards while I was on the throttle, after letting off the gas it creeped forwards slowly. On Flat ground it would move backwards while in reverse. Degraded quickly to no reverse at all and behaving like it was in neutral while in reverse.
Second is from an 91 3.1 Bird. It worked marvelously. I pulled when I installed a 305 and the aforementioned 89' Transmission
Can I just switch all the internals from the 3.1 trans to the V8 case? I cant justify spending money on a overhaul kit right now since I have two other cars to drive. If i can get a couple hundred miles out of this tranny with very little money involved then I will be thrilled, and I dont mind spending the time to do so.
thanks either way

Looking through my ATSG 700r4 book i see a few differences. The input shaft and the number of friction clutches and steels. Other than that I cant find any difference could someone who knows more about this pitch in?

Yes to the differences you found. The 2nd gear apply servo is usually smaller in the V6 trans, along with the governor being calibrated differently (higher shift points).
Instead of a full swap of all parts I would look at the V8 trans and see what needs to be replaced. If those parts are good in the V6 trans, then swap them over.
As for the 3/4 clutch pack, it may be worth it to purchase new ones. They are the weakest point in the 700R4. That and get moderately larger boost valves (regulates line pressures).
RBob.
