T5 output shaft play / wobble

re titled from this thread for more accurate help

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tran...over-55-a.html

I pulled the drive shaft and the Ujoints are all tight, only place I find any slop is the output shaft.

Google search "T5 output shaft slop" finds 999 questions and nearly all of them say its normal?

not my vid, but same thing, as his was a new tranny

Re: T5 output shaft play / wobble

It is normal.

The mainshaft splines sit in the yoke, which is supposed to be held positively in place by the extension housing bushing. As long as the ext hsg bushing is in good shape the mainshaft cannot move, and is therefore not the cause of your vibe.

Re: T5 output shaft play / wobble

Play at the yoke/ bushing is relevant. The YT video is showing normal mainshaft lososeness of a disassembled unit which is what the tail without a yoke effectively is.

If you find slop, the in-car tool to remove and reinstall the bushing comes highly recommended by me. I did one in my DD in the last year with it.

No. He posts in English.

Which verbiage works for the kids of the 30-second attention span era is tough to tell.

Re: T5 output shaft play / wobble

We said the exact same thing.

Play in the shaft when the yoke is out is normal.

The shaft is supported by the yoke, which is supported by the bushing.

If the bushing is good the final assembly has no play. If the bushing is worn OTOH, ... play is inevitable.

The bushing is less than $1. Same one fits T-350. Either find the tool set or find a shop that has it. Some transmission or drive shaft shops might. The remover will look like a 2-jaw puller; installer will look like a piece of pipe. If they show you something like that, pay em. If they give you blank stares, ... shouldn't be hard to figure out what to do with that.

Re: T5 output shaft play / wobble

Just odd how it happened, driving down a country road, not there one sec, there the next, but could of been that maybe if heat related? hmmmm though I know it had oil in it, was drippin out when the drive shaft was out, but rear was higher so not allot.

But I did drive from other side of town, got near home then kept going suddenly when I felt the need for fireworks, it was a longer trip then I normaly take.

So the tail shaft housing will come right off on its own? don't need to drop trans?

No.

Not sure where the discussion might have suggested that?

The tools consist of a puller, that reaches down between the mainshaft splines and the ext hsg, with its "fingers" pointed outwards, to grab the bushing; the screw presses on the mainshaft. The installer looks like a piece of pipe tha tgoes over the mainshaft, inside the bushing, and knocks it up in there.

ohhhh so you do it while still in the car, thought you were saying take the tail shaft housing to a trans shop n askem to do it.

wonder if autozone rents that tool?

Re: T5 output shaft play / wobble

They do not.

http://atoztool.com/2200.html will act as the puller and as the driver.

How much play is in your bushing when the driveline is installed?

Re: T5 output shaft play / wobble

Hmmm 999 google post, not one says just add oil.

oil was leaking out when shaft was out, I did put in a fresh quart last year.

to lazy to jack it up, so I just pour it into the shifter pocket till it stopped going down.

not a hint or sign of any vibration now.........

only went for a drive to make sure it wasn't to much oil, aka was it gonna blech some out the vent.

majr dumb feelings all around for me and the 1000s of similar post all over the web, chasing a vibration.

Re: T5 output shaft play / wobble

So you just filled the entire trans with fluid all the way to the top? Possible Brilliant move. How much didu put in? Now get under the car and remove the fill plug and let all the extra come back out. Overfilling is bad.

Re: T5 output shaft play / wobble

IVe always filled it through the shifter, once I get the car high enough for me to fit under it, squat comes out of the plug for the effort.
