Should I get this T5
I posted this saturday but the board went down.
I went to one of those pick and pay salvage yards
and I found a 84 or 85 Z28 the still has the T5 in it.
I don't think it a wc T5.Well anyway i can get all the
parts I need to swap my 700r4 to a 5 speed for under
$150.Think they want somthing like $144 for everything.
Now I know it's not the strongest trans, but I plan to get
a 6 speed this spring/summer.So what do you guys think??
Thanks Pep

I would go for it, its pretty cheap and you'll have everything to switch over. Now, the only problem I could see would be the speedo. If you have an electric speedo, which even still shouldn't be a problem, you'll need the VSS.
But for 144bucks I wouldn't pass it up, the core alone is almost worth that.

Why would you want to do the same swap twice? Unless you really want a manual or your auto tranny has probs just use the $150 toward your 6-speed.
Just my opinion.

in my life and it has a clutch.
Thanks Alot

what 6 speed are you going to get? some of them use parts from the T5 (bellhousing, clutch assembly, etc).
There is an aftermarket version of the T56 that bolts up in place of a T5...if that's the six speed you were going to get, then buy this tranny so you've got the parts you'll need.

Personally I'd pass on it and wait for your 6 speed and do the swap once.
$144 is a good deal but keep in mind that trans has been sitting in a "pick-your-own" salvage yard. Odds are it's got problems. You may go thru the trouble of putting it in only to learn it won't shift. For your $144 you may just end up with nothing but a decent core in need of a complete rebuild.
I almost converted my GTA to a stick earlier this year. I had a good deal on a T-5 and all the needed goodies. I even had a mechanic do a visual inspection on the internals of the trans. He said it was good to go in spite of the fact that it had been filled with gear oil instead of ATF.
Well anyway, I decided to pass on the deal and another friend of mine bought the T-5 only to discover it didn't shift correctly and he had to pull it out.

I found one in a local pick a part and got everything for $143. Unlike Bret's friend, I had good luck with mine. It too had gear oil in it, but after cleaning it out, it's fine. Good and strong. I'd say get the T5 and do the T56 swap later. If nothing else, you've got half the parts you'll need.
I'm with bhaas on this one...
that trans should have gear oil in it.
As for the swap...I say you are better off waiting for the trans you want. It is A LOT of work to swap the trans...why do it when you know you'll be doing it again soon. Just stick with the auto untill winter is over. Until then save your money

I don't remeber at what point GM made the switch but I do know the WC T-5's take ATF, NOT gear oil. The synchros are different and running gear oil will have a detremental affect on them.

tranny oil
mine is a NWC T5, 87 and uses dextron (red mineral oil used on auto trannys) and there is a point where they switched from gear to red-auto oils.
if a do recall it was somewhere around 1985.
(personally i'm about to try something crazy, i'm gonna try mobil jet-II [aviation jet oil] on my old one and see what happens)
the density is about the same and its ability to stand "real heat" has no rival)
yep i know everybody i know is calling me NUTS.
its been said that aircraft mechanics are just "plain nuts" maybe its true.
Fernando.

i don't know why some of our good friends find that so hard.
do you really wanna go manual? then just do it, myself i drove automatic camaros and mustangs before and...NEVER AGAIN
long live manual trannys !!!
i suggest you go with your idea now and when you get the T-56 it'll take you a good 4 hours of hard work to do the swap and long years of fun.
and it's true, the aftermarket T-56 will be a bolt on replacement, it will use the same bellhousing and everything inside.
