5-Speed Manual Tranny Noise - 89 Firebird

Hey everyone!

I currently am experiencing an issue with my babe and its noise from the tranny. Its quiet when in N and in 3rd, 4th and 5th gear, BUT when i change the gear to 1st and release the clutch TOO FAST, it does some "Grinding" noise. Same to gear 2nd. If i do it SLOWLY it doesnt do this "Grinding/Growling" noise.

1. Possible bearings worn out? (Input shaft bearing etc.).
2. Low fluid?
3. Clutch is worn out?

I know these questions are trivial, but its interesting that if i do it slowly, it doesnt do any sound, but when i switch gears FAST i get the "Grind". Im currently fixing a leakage problem with it and its coming from the connection of the engine and tranny. That is the explanation of low fluid. Can low fluid cause grinding noises?

Has anyone experienced this thing or can enlighten me please so i can further research this problem !

Thank you very much!

Also when im driving with the 3rd gear at low speeds, the engine seems to work "Harder". You can feel like it doesnt have enough power to push the transmission. I suspect the clutch is the cause? That is one symptom i forgot to mention.

If your in 3rd at low speeds and the engine seems to have to "work harder" as you said, its because 3rd gear is to high for your current speed, shift down.

Is the fluid low?? It's not that difficult to check your fluid. If you check it & it is at the proper level that obviously isn't your issue.

If you don't feel the grind radiating through the shifter I'd guess throwout bearing and Pressure plate are probably your grinding noises...

If you feel it coming through the shifter ..... internal bearings or syncros

A good test for tranny bearings is to let the clutch out with trans in neutral, worn bearings will give some noise and rattliing. I'd guess your problem is a shot clutch. Does it catch right at the top, with pedal almost all the way out? Another symptom of a bad clutch. Also wonder if your transmission mount might be shot, weird things happen when the tranny starts moving around, more torque at work in lower gears.
