Reverse pops out

Ok guys it's a nwc t5 and I have no 5th gear. Nothing appears to be wrong or damaged. It has been said that my preload is not good enough and that's why 5th gear hammers the snap ring off and I lose 5th gear.

But what is new is that my reverse worked just fine but now it pops out. It shifts into reverse fine and I can start letting of the clutch but as soon as I do you can feel the gear shift being pushed out of reverse. And any power given to go makes it instantly pop out of reverse.

The question is why? And how do I fix it?

I plan on getting the preload fixed but if I need to replace a part for reverse is like to do that to save money. Preload is the only thing I don't have tools for.

Could it possibly be the reverse/5th shift lever? As I think the little **** that came off it and fits into the selector was bent... But reverse still worked fine with it like that so I didn't replace it.

Re: Reverse pops out

Not fully going into gear would allow the reverse idler to pop out. The non-synchronized reverse gear teeth are point-taper profiled not unlike the synchronization teeth on the forward synchronized gears.

Where the actual shifting issue is, is another question.

Hmm. It seems like it goes into gear all the way. Doesn't give me any trouble when shifting into it. But if it's a shifting issue... Do you think it's that rod I had mentioned? Maybe it finally bent to far.

Re: Reverse pops out

If you hold the shifter in the reverse position, does it work? If it is not fully engaged, as jmd suggested, it will either grind the gears or pop back a bit farther and you'll know for sure. My 92 does that sometimes, and I just hold the shifter there and it pops back a little bit and engages fully. Another common trick, if it isn't engaging fully, is to shift into 1st then into reverse, without releasing the clutch pedal in between.

No it doesn't. If I hold it in I can go a little bit further before its pushed out but it doesn't grind. It just still gets pushed out. If I continue to hold it and try to go it just pops out and slams back in and pop out and so on. I was always told to go into 1st then reverse lol so that's how I usually go into reverse
