I've got an '88 IROC convertible, when driving the car shifts smoothly through gears, but when when shifting car initially (into Drive, Reverse, Neutral etc) the car thumps/lurches into the gear about 1-2 seconds after I move the shifter into the gear. Any thoughts why this is happening? Thanks.

Check your transmission mount. Extremely common symptom of a bad mount

You have to place a board large enough under the transmission oil pan so the jack wont punch threw and jack it up just enough to see if the transmission mount is damaged.
The rubber will separate from the metal plate its supposed to be mounted to.
Just looking at it from the side will not work.
