converting from th400 to a 5 speed
I have an 1982 camaro Z28 with a 400hp, 400ft lbs auburn limited slip with 3:73's and a th400 tranny, I would like to know what year of 5speed tranny would fit and what modifications are needed. Are there and web sites that would have this info. Or has anybody else done this before i'am sure somebody has. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Any year of 5-speed will fit, as long as it came out of one of these cars. If it came from any other kind of car, you're basically out of luck. The T-5s from 87 on up are the 2nd design "World Class" units, which are somewhat better (not particularly stronger, but otherwise a better gearbox) than the older ones.
Easiest thing to do is find a V8 car in the boneyard and strip it down. If you can find a Z28 or IROC from 87 up, that would be the best; but I doubt you'll find one of those laying around. TBI cars aren't too hard to find though. Get the whole pedal assembly including all the brackets, the clutch hydraulics, console top, shifter and boots, bell housing, flywheel, clutch, trans, torque arm, torque arm brackets, crossmember, and driveshaft. If you get all that from the same car, then the only modification you'll have to make is to cut the hole out where the clutch master cylinder mounts to the firewall, which is not particualrly difficult to do.
