Transmission rebuild advice
Hey there everyone
So the transmission on my 87 has seen better days. 700R4 behind a mostly stock L98 (ac and emission delete, flowmaster cat back) 2-3 was slipping bad on WOT and now its slipping more regularly. I am looking having it rebuilt and am looking for a good kit. Now the kicker is I only plan on using the transmission for another year or so before I do my LS swap. So I really dont want to spend the $600+ for a probuilt kit, which seems to be the most recommended kit.
I am looking for a good rebuild kit and then some recommended upgrades in addition to corvette servos and a transgo kit. I want to still have fun for the year it is in. I just cant justify spending that much money to rebuild a 700, just to do it again next year.
I have thought of putting the motor and trans in a little c10 for my wife down the road, but thats not a sure thing and wouldnt be for years.
I do have a good transmission guy but I respect the forum and wanted to see what has worked for all of you.
Thanks to everyone in advance

Re: Transmission rebuild advice
You could cheat a bit by replacing just the 3/4 clutch pack. IIRC, it is the first set after the pump, so not much work to replace it. Of course can also do some other upgrades such as larger boost valves and Corvette servo at the same time.

Re: Transmission rebuild advice
Sorry it has been a while and I kind of let this slip away. I am looking at getting my car out and having it rebuilt in the next few weeks. Has anyone used a TCI kit or one of the ebay kits? This one in particular https://www.summitracing.com/parts/tci-379100 I planned on using it with a "modified" shift kit from Dana at probuilt.
As a side note I was also wondering if I should upgrade my torque converter while I have the trans out being rebuilt. My car has about 77k miles on it and I really dont know when things like that should be changed out.

I would strongly recommend buying a kit from Dana at Pro-Built Automatics if you're going to do this yourself.
If you're looking for someone to rebuild it locally, I have always heard and read good things about Phil's Transmission in Clio, MI. Also, our state forum mifbody.com may have more suggestions for local repair shops.

Re: Transmission rebuild advice
I bought this video and used it as a general reference when I did mine.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/DVD-VIDEO-70...W-TO-A-TRANS-/
It was not hard, however I did a butt load of upgrades while I had it open.
There are also several videos on youtube, 4l60e videos will give you a good reference.

When you drop the pan and see something similar to this, clean everything you're going to reuse before putting it back together. This stuff (fried 3-4 clutches) gets everywhere.
I don't know if it matters to get all this out of the case and hard parts, but I think I spent more time scrubbing parts with a brush and Simple Green than actually R&R'ing and rebuilding the unit.
It might be easier if you can find someone with a hot tank (non-caustic).
