Rpms jumping

hello I am new to this site and I do not know much about cars and think I posted this somewhere else but anyways.. My car is a Mitsubishi Eclipse GT 2002 it is automatic and lately the rpms have been jumping up and down and I can feel my car shaking and as if it were being pushed? Sometimes it will shut off if I do not step on the gas.. My service engine soon is on but I thought it was the gas cap.. I was thinking this is probably something with the transmission or maybe spark plugs? If anyone could help solve this issue that would be great! Please try to explain to me things since I do not know cars that well! Thanks!
