Steering fitment issues

Hey guys, I have an 85' Trans Am that I'm restoring. I finished up changing the pump and redoing all the power steering lines today but it seems that the input shaft to the power steering box and the steering wheel shaft are separated. Based on the shape of both of them, they look like they should mate, but I can't figure out how to move them closer to one another. Am I missing a piece?

Also please disregard all stray wires/lines. This is definitely a work in progress.

Re: Steering fitment issues

Your column has two shafts, joined together inside.
They are typically adhered together with a plastic meant to break in case of collision (So the driver is not speared.)
The bottom shaft easily shoving up into the main column means it may have been in an accident before. A replacement column, or major tear down for parts repair is in order.

Re: Steering fitment issues

So I pulled the steering column, I was able to pull the shaft back into position with the column out of the car. Can I just put it back into the car? The shaft seems to be very stuck in place now, and if the safety plastic has already crumpled, wouldn't that make it still safe as the shaft would collapse more easily, but still collapse?
