Seals and bearings for a 91 3.1 V6
Hi Guy's,
Quick question, I've just noticed diff oil all over my rear brakes and wheel, so I guess my axle oil seal had gone.
I'm looking at replacing both the seal and the bearing, but I'm presented with about 4 different size, shape and weights when I search online at RockAuto.
My axle (as far as I know) is a standard 10 bolt with the code 8HJ C 151 1.
Can anyone give me the correct sizes for these seals and bearings for this axle?
Cheers guy's.

Bearing is 5707 or the one that ends in 1563TAV (prefix varies by mfr)
Seal is 8660.
The seal doesn't usually just "go bad". Most likely, you need axles as well. The axle itself is the inner bearing race. 99.99% of the time when the seal leaks, it's because the bearing is bad, which means the axle is also bad. The other .01% of the time, it just means you need new axles & bearings. If your axle has ANY detectable wear on the race surface, you'll be wasting your time changing the bearing and leaving the ruined axle in place.

Aww hell don't say that!!
I think what might have happened was that the car has been off the road for the last three years whilst i got round to swapping out my drums for a new disc brake kit (Right Stuff Detailing)
The axles were out of the car for quite some time whilst i got around to it. The car only has 77,000 on it and the axles look fine, no play in the bearings or whiny noises. I also made sure i coated the axles in grease so the never went rusty either.
The seal appears to have just given up after using the car for the first time in three years after about 250 miles. I'm wondering if i may have knocked it when i re-installed them.
I'll try replacing the seal and see what it does. If i have to buy new axles it'll cost a fortune to ship em out here to the UK!
Thanks for the reply, all the best.

It is possible that the seal got damaged... of course, you'll get the chance to check the axles while replacing it. The seal and bearing are very common parts, should fit quite a few kinds of cars, should be reasonably available on your side of the pond.
Summit Racing has axles, they're in the $250 range domestically. Not sure about shipping to the UK. Some of them come with all the incidental parts you'll need - seals, bearings, and wheel studs; some don't; be real careful about that while making price comparisons.

I always prefer to buy my bits from you guys over there as i know the parts are going to fit. A lot of the time most of the parts over here have been on shelves years, so I tend not to buy from over here.
Also, by the time i pay for duty and taxes, I find that any parts i buy are often less expensive buying direct!
I'm hoping that its just the seal that's damaged as like I said i've just got the car back on the road and its running beautifully. We had a 24° c day today (very rare indeed) and i'm gutted I couldn't use it
Thanks for the heads up about the axles i'll make sure I check them out.

Re: Seals and bearings for a 91 3.1 V6
It is easy to damage the seal while R&R'ing an axle (BTDT). As a matter of fact the second time I had the axles out of the '92 I replaced the seals 'just because.' Just try your best not to drag the axle on the seal while inserting or removing it.
As for the axles bearing surface, as Sofa mentioned they can go bad. The axle bearing has it's own outer race. But the axle itself is the inner race.

Re: Seals and bearings for a 91 3.1 V6
Hi Bob,
Yes that's what I'm thinking I may have done, as there is no play in the axle when I wiggle the wheel. The other side is fine so I'm just going to replace the the drivers side when it gets here (1 to 2 weeks) and see how that goes.
I did at the time think about replacing them as I had to remove the entire axle from the car when I did my brake upgrade, as I couldn't remove both axles in the garage. (too narrow!)
But although they didn't look great I decided to leave them as they were fine....Or so I thought! Guess I should have replaced them......Just because!
Anyway, thanks for the replies I've sent for two new seals £5.60 ($7.40) including shipping so that's not too bad, just fingers crossed it works!
All the best, Speed.
By the way does anyone know the exact Oil capacity of the diff box? I drained out roughly 1.5lts when I did the upgrade, but can't find a figure for the boxes capacity in either my Haynes or the service manual.
