Hawks transmission crossmember

Can the 84-92 Hawks 4L60 clearance transmission crossmember be modified to work on a 700R4? I have the gen 1 engine as well.

Re: Hawks transmission crossmember

Considering that 700R4 and 4L60 are two names for the same transmission... Probably.

GM started calling the 700R4, 4L60 when they started switching from the Turbo Hydromatic naming convention. Even the later service manuals reference the 4L60 by name instead of 700R4. So by 1991 it's a 4L60.

Re: Hawks transmission crossmember

Thanks for the post. I know that they are the same dimensionally, but I know this crossmember is for an LS swap with the 4L60. I wasn't sure if they had the engine forward or aft of the stock gen 1 setup. I'm hoping its the same, but if its even close, I may be forced to cut and re-weld it. I will post the results once I get it here.

Re: Hawks transmission crossmember

The LS would have a 4L60-E. IIRC they changed the tailshaft in there somewhere.. I.e. All bets are off.

Their 4L60E crossmember will have to be modified to use with a 700r4, but it's super easier to modify. Look here:

Wow! Thanks a million! A picture is worth a thousand words. Looks like you trim to give the governor cover some room (in his case), and weld an extension with a new hole forward of theirs. I put a new energy suspension transmission mount on and lost all clearance for my eBay Stainless works knock off headers and Y pipe. This is a life saver! Thanks again!
