Swapping 3 speed for a 700r4. Parts needed?

I just bought a 700r4 from a trusted local Camaro enthusiast. I currently have a 3 speed in my 1982. 305 engine. What else in the drivetrain will I need to replace? Will I need a new flywheel? I want to make sure I have all the parts I need. I do plan on adding a new speedometer/dash unit. Im going to make my own shifter labels also. Any ideas on what to get for a torque converter? Any/all input is appreciated!
*edit. I did do a search for my question and couldn't find anything resourceful. I tried!

If your 82 is original,

Get speedo gears for the 700 that match the ratio of the gears in your stock TH200-C.
If the driven gear tooth count divided by the drive gear count is 2.78 for example, get close to that with your 700 speeds gears. Read the sticky at the top of the forum.

The driveshaft from almost any 83-92 is needed. The third gen 1LE shafts are strong but hard to find these days of course. A quality aftermarket alum. shaft is a good option.

Most of the 4th gen shafts have either a yoke with a balancer and slightly shorter tubing, or a junky thinwall, cardboard damped alum. shaft, or a 2-piece driveline with a carrier bearing on the torque arm. All of which suck.

The way to go with a torque arm is aftermarket. First, the crossmember holes for an 83-92 crossmember aren't in an 82. Second, getting the torque arm off the transmission is more durable for trans. mounts. So do some research.

The shifter will be different. The bracket and cable at the trans. may differ.

Early 700s have a 27 spline converter, which interchanges with your 200-C, actually, so if it's good, use it. If you have a later 700, the converter is 30 spline and must be purchased. Lots of options. A factory hi-Stall from a 4.3 S10, Corvette, or G92 third gen is hard to beat.

Starter and flexplate don't need changed.

JMD, Thanks for all the info!

I read the sticky on calculating the speedo gear. Great info.
Luckily, my parts guy has a driveshaft for me if my current one doesn't work.
As for a torque arm, I'm seeing a lot online. Would this one work? https://www.summitracing.com/parts/upi-2221-r/overview/
My parts guy says he has a shifter setup for me.
I have the 27 spline, so this sounds like I may not have too much trouble getting this set up! Just waiting on confirmation to purchase the Torque Arm... then then its time to start turnin some wrenches!

Re: Swapping 3 speed for a 700r4. Parts needed?

Is a pretty easy swap-swapped my '82 to 700 back in '95.As I recall,700 crossmember will mount using two existing threaded holes, another existing hole that will need a nut placed above and the 4th hole will need to be drilled and a nut installed.I used original 3 spd shifter-just modified it for enough travel for manual 1st selection.Shift lever was further back on the700 as I recall and caused the shift cable to bind some until custom linkage was built to correct the problem. I got most of my swap parts from an '83 camaro

I believe I found the cross member I will need.
http://www.hawksmotorsports.com/tran...tomatic-4l60e/

To my knowledge, the 4L60E is the same as the 700r4, right? I just want to confirm this before I buy this. I'd hate to buy it and it be the wrong thing! Can anyone confirm or deny this is the piece I need?

Re: Swapping 3 speed for a 700r4. Parts needed?

Someone on a FB forum told me I would need to get a torque arm. Is this true? Im not looking to race my machine.

Re: Swapping 3 speed for a 700r4. Parts needed?

The crossmember in reply 5 might work, but that is a custom/HP part you don't need for street cruiser duty-stock 83 up 700 will be fine and probably fit better.4L60E is the later, ~1994 up electronic controlled version of the 700.A torque arm from a 83-92 will be needed-it is shorter than '82 part.
