need advice on a 700R4

hey all,

I'm new to the site and would like to say I find it VERY informative, I have a couple of questions about my tranny.
it is a recently rebuilt 1986 700R4 (about 3000 miles).

1- when at idle (500-600 rpm) and shifting into drive it hits very hard, will spin rear tires if in the gravel or grass, not as bad if I hit reverse first then move to drive, can this be stopped?

2- when driving like a normal human being the torque converter locks up at about 30-40 mph and rpms drop to about 700, car has no power at that rpm, can this be adjusted?

thanks in advance for any information,

High idle speed can cause that so check that first. Too high of line pressure can do it too so double check TV setting: To adjust the TV Cable skip the book method and do this: Press the 'D' shaped lock button on the adjuster and loosen the cable setting (The black housing that the metal cable is in will move forward). Now, have someone floor the gas pedal while you check to see if the throttle plate is open all the way. Usually they are off a little and will wiggle. Do whatever you have to do to get it open solid. Now, with the pedal still floored, press the 'D' button and pull the cable casing (the black tube) back as hard as you can (putting maximum tension on the metal cable) and release the button. You now have the engine, tranny and gas pedal all in sync at WOT. Mark the cable casing so if for some reason it gets moved you can know where to put it again. The problem with the 'self adjust method' is that it bends things and puts them permanently out of whack. It is also the full TV setting, which is theoretically what the GM method does.

If those steps don't help then it may be something that was done inside the tranny to "hop it up". On these earlier version I make it a point to unstall two wave plates in the Forward pack and it is a smooth or smoother than the later units that come with a FWD accumulator. As for L/U spped that can be calibrated through the VB. The best step at this point would be to install a TransGo Shift Kit (not the Reprogramming Kit) since, when you get the full SK and not the Jr. kit includes everything you need to correct shift timing issues which were a big problem on the earlier versions. It will also go a long way to greatly incresing the life of the tranny as long as the O/H was done properly, which may be in question at this time.

thanks

thanks for the reply,

the overhaul was done by AAMCO so make your own judgments about the quality of the work, it seems to shift smoothly and doesn't seem to be slipping. it just shifts to early it (i think)??

I don't think there were any hop-ups done because I didn't pay for any, i did however replace the torque converter, prior to the tranny crapping out, the torque converter shop said the one that came out of it was to low of a stall (1300) and sugested a (1800) for better drivability, just so you know I AM NOT a tranny person!!!
