Speedo problem questions

I tried a search, but couldn't find my particular problem. My 82 came with a 4-speed, but I've now got a 5-speed in it. The first trans had a mechanical clutch. The speedometer quit working shortly after the swap. I changed to a newer trans and a hydraulic clutch, hoping that the speedo problem would fix itself. No luck. Thinking the speedo head itself might be bad, I changed it with one from the wrecking yard. I think the one that I have now is from an automatic car. Would this make a difference? If I disconnect the cable at the trans and turn the cable by hand, the speedo will move. I've pulled the dash apart to lube the cable. Put it back together and it still doesn't work. Does anybody know what I need to do to get this working right? Can I just remove the VSS from the back of the cluster or is it an internal trans problem? It did the same thing with both 5-speeds. Also, the drive gear in the trans is a red gear. What color driven gear would I need to use to get it reading correctly for 3:42 rear end gears?

I swapped out the driven gear from another T5 and now it works. It reads off by 12 MPH or so, but it does work.
