Yes, You have to cut the console. I used the aluminum driveshaft that came on my car from the factory. Get a 6-speed from a LT1. I think the LS1's are different but someone on the board can tell you for sure. My 6-speed came out of a '96 T/A and I love it.
You won't be sorry. Good Luck, Chris
You won't be sorry. Good Luck, Chris anyone know of a good place to get the whole tranny setup at a good price i am realy interested in doing this and then putting some 4.10's in my car to run some stangs there isnt to many good junkyards around here any help would be nice
I have one camaro/firebird salvage in Tulsa. I called them once a week to see if they had a 6-speed car. Then I found another salvage in OK city and did the same to them. On the second week they had it. I bought every thing (Trans, flywheel, pedals, shifter, everything) for about $1400. The guy who helped me (through this site and countless E-mails) bought the same package from Billy Graham's salvage and paid around $2400. So be patient and shop around. Chris

I live here in oklahoma city and deal with a junkyard american camaro and firebird. He almost always has lt1's ls1's and 6 speeds. I was there today and he had a lt1 6 speed that he only wanted $2700 for the motor tranny {6 speed} bellhousing clutch pedals master cylinder ecm and wiring harnes and anything else needed for the swap. His # is {405} 495-9114 and ask for gary.
that's where I got mine. Good people.
The first Trans. wouldn't stay in reverse. They gave me another one and apologized for my trouble no argument and no b.s. I think this is their toll free # 1-888-833-4582.

in reposne to the post about the LS1 T56....the LSi T56 will only work with the LS1 block. the bellhousing was completely redisgned and will not bolt up to any LT1 or earlier block. im sure that there are custom bellhousings and adapter plates that can be purchased, but it is not a direct bolt in. avoiding this particular style T56 will save plenty of time and money.
