T5 rebuildable?
I have a broken T5 in my 84 Z28. Someone told me that it cannot be rebuilt and this seems kind of bogus to me, if it was built, it should be able to be rebuilt.
Anyone rebuild a T5? I know they are weak and I want a T56, but the cheapest I can find a new one for is $1500. This is too much for me to justify with a race car that eats $500 dollar slicks every other race weekend.n Thanks

It can definitely be rebuilt. However, the cost is so great that it might be worth it to get the $1500 T-56 instead. It depends on what's wrong with it. And, also depending, rebuilding may or may not fix the problem.
Does it leak fluid? What is actually wrong with it?

The tranny leaks, it has since I've owned the car so that's not what I'm worried about.
The problem is that when I take off in first gear, the shifter pops right back into neutral before I even move. If I downshift to first and let the clutch out before stopping, it stays in gear. My dad tells me it could be the shift fork, but I have yet to remove the trans to find out. It also has gotten progressively harder to shift as I accumulate miles.
The problem is not with the shifter itself, it started popping out with my stock shifter, so I bought a Hurst and it does the same thing. Any ideas will help me!

That's not too serious then...
It needs a shifter "sleeve", which is the thing the fork pushes back and forth. If it was the fork, you would be able to eventually work it into that gear, and it would work until you took it out. Also, it would probably malf in 2nd too, because they use the same fork. What you have is the teeth inside the sleeve are worn tapered. It probably needs a 1st gear too if it's done it a bunch of times.
You'll need the "sleeve" which is easy to find used, a kit which will have the bearings and other soft parts, and some patience.
Stiff shifting in all gears especially when sitting still is a clutch problem, not a trans problem.
I suggest you get a good book or buy the video from www.gearzone.net and study it carefully before you do anything. The trans isn't hard to work on, but if you don't do it right, you can end up putting it together and taking it apart about a hundred times before you finally get it right. They also sell parts, new for sure, maybe used too.
