Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
Re: Question about 9 bolt diff cover gaaket

I ditch the gasket and use just the sealer. Some one of the "ultra" variety, Right Stuff, or even (gasp!!) the new one they have that's specifically intended for gear lube applications.

Can't see what benefit a sheet of paper brings to the situation at hand.

Yes Felpro makes a gasket for the 9 bolt. I just bought one from Rockauto for my 9 bolt, put it on Sunday when I changed the rear end oil.

With that said, I also use a little black RTV on both sides of that gasket just to make sure.

The stock 9-bolt with the stock cover takes just under 2 quarts of oil. Fill it until oil starts running back out the fill hole. When you see oil coming back out the hole, stop and pop the plug in, you're done.

Be certain that you use a GL5 rated gear lube. That is critical for the hypoid. Do NOT use GL4.

Most modern synthetic GL5 oils already have the LSD friction modifier built in. I didn't add anything else. I used the Redline 75W110 synthetic oil, it has the LSD modifier in it already. Just read the bottle and know what you are putting in.

Take the cover off with the rubber plug still in there. When it is off, push the rubber plug out from the inside so you don't damage it. Finding a replacement will be very difficult. Don't f-k it up.
