Automatic HELP

i just wanted to know if you have an automatic transmission does it do a lot of damage to shift from 1 to 2 to D to overdrive? would it hurt my car?...i have an 85 trans am w/ the 305 stock engine and the stock transmission

I am guessing you mean shifting manually. I know some shift kits you buy for our transmissions MAKE you shift like that so I doubt it can do much damage at all. I have shifted like that with every car I have ever had. From what I know it doesn't hurt anything. But maybe someone who knows the mechanics of an automatic transmission can prove me wrong...
But why do our cars have an option to drop it into 1st???

On an '85 I would NOT recommend it. If you were to put a pressure gauge on it you would see that you have LOWER pressure in the manual ranges (1 & 2) than you do at higher throttle in D or O/D. You need to install a larger Int/Rev bost valve assy. I would also recommend strongly that you istall a TransGo Reprogrmming kit too at that time.
