86 camaro 700r4 Automatic transmission

I have a carbureted 86 chevy camaro with the 700r4 auto trans. Here's the problem: when driving from a stop the rpm shoots high and then switchs gears slowly and then everything is normal. I am no expert with 700r4 but could someone please tell what's going on here?

Sounds normal... starts out in 1st which is super low, then shifts to 2nd which is a yuuuuuujjjje change... if you put it in manual Lo, does it do the same thing, except stay in that 2nd gear?

Yes it does stay in 2nd gear. Do I need to change the detent cable? It's an automatic transmission. The RPM goes way high and slowly goes out of 2nd gear.
