Spinning rear wheel when idling in gravel

Ok so I had a weird thing happen last night while backing the camaro into the garage. I had parked it in the driveway yesterday to wash it then I went about my business mowing and such and later in the night when I went to back it into the garage it was spinning the rear right wheel in the gravel when idling in drive. If I mashed the brake it would stop for a second and it only would do it in drive not in reverse. It wasn't completely warmed up so the idle was pretty high still but it shouldn't be trying to spin the tire right? Is my torque converter taking a dump on me? or is the car just light enough that if the idle is still high it can spin a wheel in gravel?

The TBI 305's that I have driven always seemed to have a pretty high idle speed when cold, coupled with a stock low stall speed torque converter would cause the wheels to try to turn. Make sure your rear brakes are working correctly. If the rear brakes are not working as they should, the front tires will hold the car back, but the rear will try to spin when on a slippery surface such as gravel, snow or ice.

If it's rear drum, pretty good bet they are out of adjustment. Or the wheel cylinder is stuck,

Hate to revive an old thread, but having the same issue. Only difference is it's in reverse and both tires. 91 formula w/ posi rear. Couldn't find anyone with a similar issue other than this post. Almost ended up stuck in my own driveway due to how severe the tire spin digs the car in a hole. Have to mash my foot on the brake to stop it while quickly putting it back in park. Idle jumps up and car acts as if someone is applying throttle. IAC or TPS maybe?

Re: Spinning rear wheel when idling in gravel

I keep being reminded of my life driving a Third-Gen Camaro (when I just obtained my Driver's License, at age 16)
I drove that Camaro in my very first winter in deep snow.

The Car was all stock (so very little Torque and Horsepower) with a worn-out Posi-Differential.
Simply moving the Gear-Selector from the Park position to the Over-Drive position (with my foot holding the Brake)...
Would allow one Wheel/ Tire to spin and spin (standing still) without even touching the Accelerator-Pedal.

So I do not recommend driving in the rain, ice, or snow...
Until becoming very familiar with the Rear-End/ Tires spinning, when you do NOT want them to.

Good luck, and have fun!
Third-Gens are damn awesome!!!

Re: Spinning rear wheel when idling in gravel

I got pulled over once because I stopped on ice and the rear wheels kept spinning. It was a combination of two factors: too much cam for the converter and weak rear disc brakes (9-bolt). It did it on gravel too sometimes.
