10 bolt rebuild - Yukon gear?
I have a 10 bolt 3.23 gears from a 92 350 GTA with posi and disc brakes. The rear end is for my 92 which has an open diff with 3.23 gears and drum brakes right now from a V6. I got the complete rear end as a present including the correct prop valve, but it needs a rebuild. The PO told me that the right brake caliper is stuck and the LS isn't working anymore. Not a bad deal for zero money.
I disassebled everything and need advice here. What should I do? Just rebuild the original carrier (is that even possible or advisable?) or should I buy a whole new unit like the Yukon Dura Grip https://www.yukongear.com/productdet...px?ProdID=5305 and the mating gears https://www.yukongear.com/productdet...x?ProdID=12921
I couldn't find any bad reviews about yukon. My goal is a QUIET! rear end with the original 3.23 gears and a good working posi. I don't want noise or whining from the diff. Is Yukon a good choice? Thanks!

The OE carrier (Auburn POS) is not rebuildable. Trash.
Yes the Yukon is OK. "Noise" and "whining" aren't generally a function of the differential though; more usually, that's worn pinion bearings, bad axles and bearings, or poor setup.
It's a clutch type unit though. You might like a clutchless type better, such as the Torsen (stock in 98-02 rears) or Eaton TrueTrac. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/d...a317/overview/
I would STRONGLY recommend NOT re-using the existing gears. If you want noise-free, best to start with new ones, since they're only $200 or so. Any of the name-brand products except the Richmond drag-race ones would be fine: US Gear, Precision, Dana, Motive, Strange, Yukon. Avoid ones made in Thailand and Malaysia and India and places like that; not so much that those people can't make gears, but rather that someone who would go to that extent to keep their costs low, will typically cheeeeep out in other ways as well. I would also STRONGLY recommend new axles, since the axle itself IS the inner race of the bearing; meaning, if the bearing is bad, so is the axle. And they almost always are bad.
Your BOM should be:
Gears
Carrier
Axles w/ bearings & seals
"Gear Install Kit" (bearings, shims, seals, etc.)
Calipers
Maybe a T/A or similar "girdle" cover
Fluid

Re: 10 bolt rebuild - Yukon gear?
Thank you sofakingdom, I hoped you would comment on my thread. I always like to read your posts and appreciate your knowledge. Your list matches my intention. I think I will buy a master overhaul kit from Yukon that includes all bearings and seals, along with the DuraGrip diff and their 3.23 gear set. I also planned on swapping the axles, thanks for your confirmation. I will buy them from USA Standard gear off rockauto, the yukon ones are much more expensive. Brake calipers are disassembled and ready for new paint, a TA performance cover is on the shelf since last october.
One last question: I planned on using the original AC Delco 80W-90 with the AC Delco LS additive (can get it cheap here in germany). Any better recommendations?
