92 305, 4L60?
I have recently gotten a service manual for 92 Camaro's. The only automatic transmission listed in the manual is a 4L60 . Everything I've seen on this forum by all the posts I have ever read says that these cars have 700R4's. So is the manual wrong or what gives?
Re: 92 305, 4L60?
The simple answer is , , , , You have both !!!!Well , sort of . In their infinite wisdom GM chose to rename the 700R4 to the 4L60 (4 speeds , Longitudinally mounted , "60" being a power handling rating) , but from what I have read the actual unit remained pretty much the same until the 4L60E was introduced sometime during the 4th gen F body production , the "E" designation indicating Electronically controlled shifts .

Zackly…
2 names for the same thing.
They introduced the 4L60 style of naming sometime around 89 or 90. It was not widely adopted in the world at large (i.e. by anybody except GM internally) for the existing products such as the 700-R4.
