92 camaro vss problem

hey guys, so i have a 92 RS thats been swapped to a 350carbed and 700r4.
When I bought the car the speedometer did not work and the transmission needed to be rebuilt.
So first things first a bought a rebuilt 700r4 and switched the tailshaft from my original 700r4.
I then noticed that the 700r4 that was in the car as well as the new one both have mechanical speedo cables.
Do i need to buy a tailshaft from w 92 with the vss? Or is there another solution.

Thanks,

Re: 92 camaro vss problem

The tail shaft is the same. You need to look in the locking glovebox in the trunk of your car for a label that says "Service Parts Identification" with a bunch of 3 digit codes on it. Make note of the Dxx codes. Then go to Rock Auto or your preferred vendor of discount auto parts, look for a vehicle speed sensor for a 92 Camaro, then look for where they say this sensor fits cars with codes D??, and look for one with a code that matches the code from your car.

You may also need a different pair of drive/driven gears that match the rear gear ratio in your car. The driven gear goes on the end of the VSS, the drive gear goes on the output shaft of the transmission. With the proper speedometer gears, and proper VSS, your speedometer has a pretty good chance of working, barring other unforeseen issues.
