700R4 governor.......stuck?

Okay, so my 700 is shifting low. It's a trans I got with my engine and it has a TCI Streetfighter 2400 stall, a 'vette servo and otherwise unknown modifications. I tried to extract the governor to check the weights and springs and it won't come. I tried turning it either direction and pulling on it. It just won't come out. How much force can I give this thing before I do something dumb? I've had these in the past and typically they just come on out on their own with almost no resistance.

Re: 700R4 governor.......stuck?

So I got the governor out. Sort of. Half the gear is still in there. I think the pin was half out and that's what caused my problem. The pin sure didn't come out with the governor. I'm going to pop the tail shaft and see what I can do with it. In the mean time a video of it. The weights were "D" weights and the springs were a whitish orangeish spring and a flat out orange spring that seems very heavy. I'm thinking this is a diesel governor maybe? I'm not surprised that this thing was shifting at 4K though at this point. The weights out of my other governors are "C" weights or unmarked. I don't think there were spot welded weights on the light one but there's no markings either.

Later shifts = lighter weights, heavier springs

Both of those things mean that the governor has to reach a higher RPM before the weights fly outward, which is what triggers shifting.

I don't know the letter codes, but you can get kits with weights & springs in them, to tune it. You can buy a "performance" sort of calibrated one, aka "Vette", to start out with; I think it's the same one that would have come in V8 F-bodies.

Re: 700R4 governor.......stuck?

Got it out, had to pop the tail shaft off after I broke the gear in half. I never found the pin which is really odd as well, I suspect that's what was sticking up. Found this great thread, lots of useful stuff there. I was going to go with the "mid range" selection but based on the governors in their pics and what they said they shifted at I ended up going with the more aggressive parts I had. I'll probably end up grinding a set to look like the more aggressive governors here "just in case" I need them. I've only got 3 spares at the moment so I can afford to lose a few parts to mistakes. I need to get a couple engine fixes in but it's buttoned up and ready to test.
