Can’t seat low reverse piston to clear snap ring groove

I’m having problems pushing the low reverse piston any further down in the case. I have the raised notch on the piston lined up to the recessed

notch in the case. I tried tapping with a really long screw driver it won’t go further to clear the snap ring groove. Also the pawl tooth moves in and out in the case where the cutout in the piston is . Here are some pics

I’m afraid if I install the spring and compress it I might nick the smooth machined surfaces in the case where the piston rides, I defining don’t want this!!

I can't remember, but if any of the three piston seals are lip seals, make sure they're installed facing the correct direction.

I also seem to recall having this problem. I don't know how I got the piston to seat other than on the last attempt (obviously) it dropped in.

I don't know if there's room to do this, but you might try rocking the piston in a circular motion to see if it'll drop in. All I can add is jel up the seals and the case really good before trying to seat it.

They are definitely square seals like the pump housing seal with no lip orientation. The reverse drum and input drum pistons had them notched seals.

I matched them up with what I removed and what was in my seal and gasket kit. I can’t spin the piston in a circular motion

I went back and looked at the photos I took and they're square x-section seals.

All I can tell you then is to lube the seals and the case - liberally with something similar:

There's different brands like Assemblee Goo, TransGel and come in different consistencies. I prefer the blue stuff over the green (in the container on the right), it's a bit more soft and tacky than the green stuff. Some people say Vaseline is OK.

I went back and wrestled with the piston for almost two hours, i tried everything, I lubed the hell out of it and it won’t budge. I tried my old seals and they pushed in like a glove. I think the rubber is too soft and are deforming. I encountered the same thing with the input reverse drum piston. My old ones are not rough and “alligatored”, they are smooth and shiny
